2026 Could Finally Open The Door For Canadian Homeownership

December 9, 2025

After years of rate spikes, price swings, and shaky buyer confidence, the Canadian housing market may be approaching a long-awaited turning point. According to the latest REMAX report, 2026 won’t bring a dramatic boom—but it could deliver what buyers have been waiting for: more affordability, more inventory, and far more stability.

What’s driving the shift:

  • Buyer confidence is returning. One in 10 Canadians plans to buy within the next year as prices soften, listings rise, and the market shows early signs of predictability.
  • First-time buyers are back in force. They now make up half of all potential purchasers, led by younger Canadians feeling more optimistic about the economy and ready to re-enter the market.
  • Small rate cuts could unlock demand. For nearly a quarter of Canadians, a further 0.5%–1% drop in interest rates could be the final push—especially with cuts already rolling out through 2025.
  • Location priorities are shifting again. As return-to-office policies gain traction, commute times and transit access are becoming key factors for younger buyers balancing affordability with daily routines.
  • Markets are stabilizing nationwide. Ontario and B.C. are cooling, Prairie markets are steady, and Atlantic Canada continues to offer predictability and modest growth—bringing much-needed balance after years of extremes.

The bottom line:

Canadians haven’t given up on owning a home—they’re simply more realistic. While affordability challenges remain, 2026 is shaping up to be the first year in a long time where the market feels steadier. And for many hesitant buyers, that stability might be enough to finally make a move.
