Prepping your house BEFORE the snow!

November 11, 2025

Fall is in full swing (and in some places, it looks like winter is, too!) The leaves are still dropping, the air smells like pumpkin spice, and winter is just around the corner. As the cold sets in, it’s time to check off your home maintenance list. A little prep now can save you money, time, and stress later.

1. Drain the Hose

Turn off outdoor water valves and drain hoses to prevent freezing and bursting. Unroll hoses on a slope to let all water run out.

2. Clear the Vents

Make sure attic and roof vents are debris-free to prevent ice dams and mold. A quick blast with a leaf blower does the trick.

3. Clean the Chimney

Before lighting fires all winter, have your chimney inspected and cleaned to remove creosote buildup and reduce fire risk.

4. Store Pots & Planters

Empty soil from outdoor pots to prevent cracking when the moisture inside freezes.

5. Clear the Gutters

Clogged gutters cause roof leaks and ice dams. Have them professionally cleaned and ensure downspouts drain at least 1.5 metres from your foundation.

6. Seal Gaps

Use caulking and weather stripping to close gaps around windows and doors, keeping drafts and moisture out.

7. Inspect the Roof

Use binoculars to spot missing or damaged shingles and check flashing around chimneys. Fix small issues before winter hits.

8. Protect the A/C

Skip the plastic wrap — cover your outdoor unit with plywood instead to protect it from ice and falling debris.

9. Service the Heating System

Schedule a furnace or heat pump inspection to ensure it’s ready for winter. Ask for a carbon monoxide test, too.

10. Reverse Ceiling Fans

Switch fans to run in reverse to circulate warm air and help lower heating costs.

While they may all seem pretty obvious, a few hours of prep now will keep your home warm, safe, and problem-free all winter long.
